Notepad++ is a text and source code editor for Microsoft Windows. It supports tabbed editing, allowing multiple open files to be processed in one window. The name of the project comes from the C increment operator.
Notepad++ is distributed as free software. Initially, the project was hosted on SourceForge.net, downloaded 28 million times from there, and won the Source Forge Community Choice Award for Best Developer Tool twice. The project was hosted on Tux Family [fr] from 2010 to 2015; Notepad++ has been hosted on GitHub since 2015. Notepad++ uses the Scintilla editor component.
Notepad++ was developed by Don Ho in September 2003. The developer used JEXT (Java-based text editor) in his company, but due to poor performance, he started to develop a text editor written in C++ with Scintilla. Since his company rejected the idea, he has developed it in his spare time. Notepad++ is built as a Microsoft Windows application. The author considered but rejected the idea of porting it to Mac OS X and Unix platforms using wxWidgets.
Notepad++ was originally released on SourceForge on November 25, 2003 as a Windows-only application. It is based on the Scintilla editor component, written in C++, only uses Win32 API calls, and only uses STL to improve performance and reduce program size.
In January 2010, the U.S. government asked the host of an open source project in the U.S. to deny access to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria in order to comply with U.S. laws. In response to the developer’s belief that it violates the concept of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), in June 2010, Notepad++ moved out of the United States by releasing a version on TuxFamily, France. Until 2015, when Notepad++ completely left Sourceforge, some of Notepad++’s community services (such as forums and bug trackers) remained on Source forge.
